I agree that badges are especially for data science probably one of the least important things.

What I want to add is that, as a software engineer with a relatively strong math background, I had an edge over other data scientists just by writing *clean code*. I became pretty efficient after 3 months because I could reuse or easily adjust much of my written code. (For data science it was a relatively large source code project).
