The OS market is actually a duopoly when one refers to OS with a usability on par with Windows and Mac. There isnt really any other choice for the consumer.
As a person acquainted with Linux, I can tell you that Linux has suboptimal implementations for certain things. Contributions to the Linux kernel have not always been best-practice. This gives you sometimes "hacky" experience to solve things on the system.
Maybe one day someone will say "I make a better OS from scratch" similarly to how Elon Musk created a whole car company from scratch. But note that making a new OS from scratch may be larger challenge than a car company!
